Rafting the Hooch 1 -
Move on to
Rafting the Hooch 2
The "Hooch" is the Chattooga River, made famous by the 1972 movie, "Deliverance",
starring Burt Reynolds.
The Chattooga flows
between north GA and SC. In the summer of 2003, Alan, Ryan, Heather, Sue
and
I rafted the most challenging of the Hooches' 4 sections and shot through several
Category 4 and 5 rapids.
After record rains in Georgia, the Hooch was at its highest water level in
over 30 years and the rapids were very challenging, such that extra guides were posted along the
route with safety ropes and life preservers. Alan flipped right out of our
raft on one of the rapids and
was quickly hauled in to safety. Luckily, the Nantahala Outdoor Center
has conducted commercial rafting trips
since 1972 with no loss of life. However, many lives have been lost
during unguided trips during the worst of river conditions. These great photos
were taken by our raft guides as we "shot the Hooch!"
